Microdermabrasion is an powerful exfoliation treatment that is typically performed in a medical spa setting by an aesthetician or dermatologist. There are two common types of microdermabrasion machines- diamond tip (crystal free) and crystal. Usually the machine that is used depends on the preference of the facility (they both give the same level of results). In a crystal procedure there is a small hand held tip connected to a 2 way vacuum that sprays fine sand like crystals onto the skin while simultaneously removing the dead skin cells. Crystal free or diamond tip is the same idea but without a crystal flow and instead a diamond tipped head with a roughened surface.
How Does the Procedure Work? After determining the level of exfoliation appropriate for your skin type, your aesthetician will prep the area and begin the microdermabrasion process. You may feel a small amount of suction/friction but shouldn't have any discomfort throughout the procedure. Redness is expected after any kind of a deep exfoliation and will subdue after half hour or so. Your aesthetician will apply the necessary calming, protective and SPF products they determined.
What are the Results? The great thing about microdermabrasion is that you will begin to see results almost immediately! After a series of treatments it can largely reduce acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and fine lines/wrinkles. I have noticed improved hydration with all of my clients that underwent more than 1 treatment within a 6 month period.
Who is Microdermabrasion Right For? Microdermabrasion is great for any skin type, age or color! It is much safer for the skin because there are no chemicals involved in the process. Healing time is about 24 hours as opposed to the 1-2 week downtime involved with chemical peeling.
How Often Should I Get Microdermabrasion? Your cell turnover is at it's quickest the younger you are. How often you get microdermabrasion depends on how fast your cells regenerate between procedures. Typically someone in their 30's will have a turnover rate of about 4 weeks, so that is usually how often I recommend my clients to do a series. It will depend on the discretion of your aesthetician.
